Magic Fan: Dyson Air Multiplier

By Kalib Crone

That... is a fan?

Yes, believe it or not, that blue circle looking object is in fact a fan. If you were to stand in front of this machine, you wouldn't expect to feel a breeze coming from an object consisting on only an open space in the middle, but it surprisingly, it does.

The most interesting question of all is, simply how does this phenomena work?

While the center of the fan does not have any blades, inside the base is a brushless electric motor. This motor quietly takes in the surrounding air and pushes it up through the circular tube until it reaches the exit points along the side of the circular tube. Once it exits, this small amount of air, according to Dyson, pulls about 15 times more air from its surrounding creating a very nice and constant flow of air. To see a visual of how this fan works, check out this video.
While looking through the comments on this video, I also found a pretty nice description of how the motor works

"The base unit contains a mixed-flow impellor - a 3-dimensional turbine designed to draw in air and force it at high pressure out of the Loop Amplifier. This initial flow of air draws in surrounding ambient air, creating a much more powerful column of laminar ("smooth") air."- vintagehoover from youtube.com

This is one of my personal favorite items of the future also because of how plainly futuristic it looks. These Dyson Air Multiplier fan come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, but all built with the same concept. To create a new and more efficient means of producing air flow without the sometimes dangerous blades and annoying buffeting noise produced by the blades of conventional fans.
